COY What a whirlwind the last few weeks have been!! We were extremely honored and blessed by being selected to represent the Alabama District as Couple of the Year for 2004. We are entering into a new phase of our GWRRA involvement that will stretch us to new heights and cause us to grow in directions that we never expected to go. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone involved in the COY program and especially to our fellow Chapter N members for honoring us as their couple, and thus allowing us to participate in the selection process. Dave and Ellen Hamilton, along with all the prior District COY’s have left us some very big shoes to fill and we will endeavor to do our best to live up to the legacy that has been handed down to us. Our first function to attend since the District Rally was Chapter T’s Funday in Brookwood, AL. Rick has always been scheduled to work on the day of their funday and this year was no exception, so I loaded up with several dozen of my closest friends and headed south for the entertainment event of the year. Everyone was very friendly and I especially enjoyed getting to visit again with the Thomas’s, Chapter T’s COY for 2004. We already knew that they are a precious and talented couple, but we never realized just how talented! They danced to a couple of ballroom numbers and looked absolutely beautiful. I told Betty that we would be coming to visit them for ballroom dancing lessons very soon. All of the chapter’s entertainment was outstanding as always. While I was telling Rick about my day’s adventure, I told him that I didn’t know what type of vitamins that chapter was taking but I wanted to find out. On the second Thursday of April, we were very honored to be invited to speak at the Hokes Bluff Lions Club. Dewey and Alice Cole, along with ourselves presented a short program on the GWRRA, motorcycle safety and motorcycle awareness. Everyone in attendance seemed very interested and asked many questions. We have been approached about speaking at other civic groups and hope that we get to continue touting the benefits of GWRRA and motorcycle awareness. This has been an area of interest with us ever since we joined and we look forward to being able to do our part in raising public awareness and helping to improve the perceived image of motorcycle riders. Thank you again to everyone involved with the COY program. We are very much looking forward to our coming year and to getting around to visit every chapter in the state. Rick and Laura Brothers |

GWRRA
REGION A TRIKE SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP (SIG) NEWS FOR MAY, 2004
Two
Trike Rider Courses were conducted in April; At the AL District Rally, and in
the FL Panhandle. Although I’ve
taken the Trike Course 4 times since 1998, I still learn something new and
enjoy the memory refreshers that help us to sharpen our knowledge and skill
levels. All Trike Riders are urged to attend the new Trike Course as
soon as it’s available to you. Contact
your District Trike SIG Representative or one of the Assistant District
Representatives for assistance in getting a course scheduled in your area.
It’s well worth the time and effort.
While on the subject
of safety, I have had numerous occasions where oncoming vehicles, vehicles
that have passed me, and vehicles that I overtake on the road, pull over and
let me pass thinking that I am an emergency vehicle due to my modulating
headlight. The point is, most
people see it and that’s it’s main purpose; to help you to be seen.
Modulating headlights are legal in all 48 states, (not sure about
Canada, Alaska, & others), and in my opinion, this is some of the best
“safety chrome” money you can spend.
Cost for a 1500 run from $85 to $100 and since an 1800 has 2
headlights, it’s kit cost about $150. It’s
very simple to install and I urge anyone who rides a motorcycle of any type to
consider this important safety device. It
just might save your life.
The FL District
Rally was another good one with absolutely perfect weather. About 27 folks enjoyed a scenic ride and good food at a Dairy
Queen on the Trike Hike. We
wanted to stop along the road and pick a few oranges from the many orange
groves we saw, but as we understand, that can get you a fast trip to the
“jail house.” At the AL
Rally, the weather was not as cooperative, and the DD and Staff were faced
with numerous “Murphy’s Law” situations, but they overcame them and had
a good rally in spite of the obstacles. Thirty
eight people enjoyed a Trike Hike to Decatur, AL, to Big Bob Gibson’s BBQ
which has won the International BBQ Cooking Contest in Memphis, TN several
times in various categories. No
complaints were heard about any of the food and the home made pies were also a
big hit. Guy & Sue
Blankenship have planned another scenic Trike Hike ride to an excellent
restaurant with superb food at the SC District Rally April 29 – May 2.
Everyone riding trikes/side cars and your friends are encouraged to
join us for more fun times with good food and fellowship.
We are still in the
process of recruiting District Representatives for FL and GA, and Assistant
Representatives for AL, GA, and MS. These
positions don’t require a lot of your time and can be very rewarding and
fun. We need all current GWRRA
Trike SIG Members to assist us in getting all of the trike and side car riders
on our mailing list. There are no
additional dues and it’s just a matter of getting their address, phone
number, e-mail address, type of trike/side car, etc. into the Trike SIG
database. They can sign up at any
of the Region A District Rally’s and the Region A Rally, Wing Ding, or on
line on the Trike SIG Webpage. Each
Trike SIG Rep and Ass’t Reps have a brochure of information with a form to
sign up. Region A currently has
the highest number of Trike SIG Members of any Region and we need your help to
keep it that way.
Please come by the
Trike SIG table at any of the District/Region Rally’s and at Wing Ding and
get acquainted with your Representatives and our National Coordinators at Wing
Ding. Our purpose is to help you
have more fun and suggestions are always encouraged and welcome.
We hope to see you soon.
